CANOPY OPERATIONS

Note regarding the RSO cockpit:

Project version v3.0-Evo introduces functional pilot canopy system (front cockpit). The RSO (rear) cockpit is a Work-in-Progress and will be implemented in a future update.

General description:
The SR-71 Blackbird's canopy was designed to withstand extreme conditions, featuring 1.25-inch thick solid quartz glass that became hot to the touch during flight.

To access the cockpit, ground crew used a specialized tool—a bar inserted into a concealed door on the aircraft. By pushing this bar into the canopy lift mechanism, they could open the canopy, allowing pilots to enter or exit the aircraft.

The canopies were secured by red locking bars when it was opened while the aircraft was prepared for flight, or during maintenance (the red bar is not modeled in v3.0. It will be added down the road, when both the forward and aft cockpits and canopies will be fully functional).

Canopies main components - pilot operation:

  • A seal-pressure on/off lever, located on the RH side of the cockpit, up front, operated the seal pressure valve.
  • A lock/unlock latch handle was located on the RH side of the cockpit, operated the canopy locking mechanism (in the closed state).
  • The SR-71 Blackbird's canopy was equipped with a hydraulic cylinder designed to assist in opening and closing the heavy structure. This hydraulic mechanism counterbalanced the canopy's weight, ensuring smooth and controlled operation.

The SR-71 Blackbird was equipped with a "Canopy Unsafe" warning light, designed to alert the pilot to potential issues with the canopy's secure closure and pressure-sealing. This warning was crucial, as an unsecured canopy could compromise the aircraft's pressurization and structural integrity, especially at high speeds and altitudes.

Here is a fast-guide showing the canopy main components:

  • Note the canopy interaction zones - these zones are meant for 'pushing' the canopy up, or 'pulling' it down, once the locking latch is in the 'opened' state.
  • Note the canopy unsafe warning light, located in the main annunciation panel.
